چکیده

Electron field emission measurements have been made on multiwall arc discharge carbon nanotubes embedded in a conjugated polymer host. Electron emission at low nanotube content is observed and attributed to an enhancement of the applied electric field at the polymer/nanotube/vacuum interface where the electron supply through the film is attributed to fluctuation induced tunneling in a disordered percolation network. A high network resistance is attributed to a polymer coating surrounding each nanotube, resulting in high resistance nanotube-polymer-nanotube tunnel junctions. The potential use of carbon nanotube-polymer composites for field emission based displays is also discussed. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2158023

Carbon-nanotube-polymer nanocomposites for field-emission cathodes.

The electron field-emission (FE) characteristics of functionalized single-walled carbon-nanotube (CNT)-polymer composites produced by solution processing are reported. It is shown that excellent electron emission can be obtained by using as little as 0.7% volume fraction of nanotubes in the composite. Furthermore by tailoring the nanotube concentration and type of polymer, improvements in the c...

Effects of Nanotube/Matrix Interface on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Mechanical Properties

In this paper, experimental and Finite Element Methods have been used to determine mechanical properties of nanocomposites. Standard tensile and compression samples with 0.0, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 weight fraction of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) were prepared and tested. Nanotube weight fraction was varied to investigate the effects of nanotube weight fraction on nanocomposite...

Influence of mechanical stress on electron field emission of multiwalled carbon nanotube–polymer composites

Field emission properties of carbon nanotubes under mechanical stress have been investigated. The emission threshold fields initially decrease from 2.3 to 0.6 V/mm before rising back to 3.1 V/mm with increasing mechanical stress applied externally to the film. This behavior from nanotube composites has not been reported and is believed to be associated with modification to the work function of ...

Enhancement of thermal and electrical properties of carbon nanotube polymer composites by magnetic field processing

We show that the thermal and electrical properties of single wall carbon nanotube ~CNT!-polymer composites are significantly enhanced by magnetic alignment during processing. The electrical transport properties of the composites are mainly governed by the hopping conduction with localization lengths comparable to bundle diameters. The bundling of nanotubes during the composite processing is an ...

Effect of Polymer Gate Dielectrics on Charge Transport in Carbon Nanotube Network Transistors: Low-k Insulator for Favorable Active Interface.

Charge transport in carbon nanotube network transistors strongly depends on the properties of the gate dielectric that is in direct contact with the semiconducting carbon nanotubes. In this work, we investigate the dielectric effects on charge transport in polymer-sorted semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (s-SWNT-FETs) by using three different polymer insulato...
